This pen tray is made of cherry tree bark.
During the rainy season, when the bark of the cherry tree has softened, the craftsmen go into the mountains and strip the tree of its bark only, then prepare it for use. This is a traditional craft from the northeastern part of Japan.
The bark of the cherry tree is not painted at all, but it is shiny, strong, and luxurious in appearance.
The kimono we chose to match it with is called iromuji, which is monochromatic and has only a small pattern.
